The short answer
Cartier relaunched the Tortue in 2024. Fake Tortue watches sold under that year label copy the tonneau outline. They use steel cases, quartz or Seagull ST19 movements, and printed dials. The genuine 2024 Tortue Monopoussoir uses a platinum or rose gold case and the in-house Calibre 1928 MC.
What Cartier released in 2024
The Tortue dates to 1912. Louis Cartier drew the case with two rounded sides that taper toward the lugs. The shape gave the watch its name, French for tortoise. The Monopoussoir, a single-button chronograph, arrived in 1928.
At Watches and Wonders in April 2024, Cartier brought the line back. The Tortue Monopoussoir Chronograph came in a 950 platinum case limited to 200 pieces and in an 18k rose gold case. Case size is 43.7 mm by 36.2 mm. The movement is Calibre 1928 MC, hand-wound. The chronograph pusher sits inside the crown at 3 o'clock.
Cartier has revised Tortue references since launch. Current listings and prices are on cartier.com. Allocation for the platinum run and the gold run differs by market.
How replica versions are built
Most replica Tortue cases are 316L stainless steel with a plating layer. Plating runs 3 to 5 microns on gold-tone models. Case thickness sits 1 to 2 mm above the genuine profile because the caseback is flat instead of curved to the wrist.
Three movement types show up:
- Quartz, a low-cost Japanese or Chinese module. The chronograph hand is a pusher-driven seconds hand.
- Seagull ST19, a Chinese hand-wound column wheel chronograph copied from the Venus 175. This is the closest mechanical match.
- Decorated automatic movements with a decorative bridge plate. These are not hand-wound and use the wrong base.
Tells on a 2024 Tortue replica
- Crystal: mineral glass or flat sapphire. Genuine uses curved sapphire that follows the case.
- Crown pusher: separate button beside the crown instead of one integrated pusher.
- Dial print: Roman numerals with uneven stroke weight. The railway track loses spacing near the subdial.
- Hands: painted blue steel instead of heat-blued steel.
- Caseback: shallow laser engraving. Reference numbers do not match Cartier records.
- Strap: generic alligator print. Genuine uses matched alligator with a folding clasp.
Price ranges
Quartz Tortue replicas sell for $50 to $120. Hand-wound ST19 versions sell for $230 to $450. Gold-plated cases add $40 to $90. Genuine 2024 Tortue Monopoussoir prices sit in the five-figure range in US dollars. Cartier publishes current figures.
US legal status
Trafficking in counterfeit goods is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. 2320. Penalties for a first offense reach 10 years in prison and a $2 million fine for a person. Selling a fake as genuine also exposes the seller to civil claims under the Lanham Act.
US Customs and Border Protection seizes counterfeit watches. Watches rank among the top seized product categories. CBP treats items bearing counterfeit marks as prohibited, and shipments of one or two items are still subject to seizure.
