Short answer
A fake IW328018 is a replica of an IWC watch that carries that reference number. The number belongs to IWC. It does not belong to the seller. Replicas sold under it are copies: not built by IWC, not covered by IWC warranty, and refused by IWC service centers. The search term is narrow, which tells you the buyer already knows the target watch. The risk sits with the seller, not the reference.
What the reference covers
IW328018 is an IWC reference in the Portugieser line. IWC publishes case size, dial, strap, and movement data for each reference on its own product pages. Check those numbers there before you compare any replica. Replica sellers copy reference numbers from spec sheets and attach the wrong number to the wrong dial. Confirm the dial variant, case diameter, and movement first, then judge the copy.
Three tiers of fake
- Budget, $80 to $150. Plated case, quartz or low-grade automatic, printed dial, hollow bracelet. Mass lands far under the real watch.
- Mid, $200 to $350. 316L steel case, Chinese automatic with a cloned rotor, applied markers, sapphire glass on some units.
- Clone, $450 to $800. Copied case profile, decorated movement, close dial fonts, solid end links.
Words like "first copy" and "1:1" carry no standard meaning. Two sellers use the same words for watches two tiers apart. Ask for photo sets of the actual unit, not stock images.
Tells that survive a photo check
- Dial print. Genuine text holds a sharp edge under a 10x loupe. Copies show fill and ragged edges at 3x.
- Subdial depth. Copies cut shallow, so the hand sits close to the dial.
- Caseback engraving. Copy engraving reads laser-cut and shallow next to a deep engraved caseback.
- Movement. Ask for a photo of the movement and the balance wheel. Decorated plates hide cheap base calibers.
- Weight. A steel case plus a solid bracelet carries mass. Ask for a gram figure on a kitchen scale.
US legal position
US Customs and Border Protection can seize and destroy shipments of counterfeit goods. Trafficking in counterfeits is a federal crime under 18 U.S.C. § 2320. Buying one piece for personal use is a different matter from selling, but the parcel can still be seized and the money is gone. Rights holders pursue sellers in most cases, not single buyers.
Service and resale
No IWC boutique or authorized service center will touch a copy. Parts do not interchange with genuine components. Resale value on a replica sits near zero the day it ships. Put that number into the price comparison.
