Short answer
A replica IW329172 is a third-party copy of an IWC watch that carries the IW329172 reference. Quality falls into three groups: entry builds under $120, mid builds at $150 to $350, and top builds above $400. The case alloy, crystal, dial print, and movement separate the groups. Check the original model on iwc.com first. Sellers reuse one photo set across several references, so the photos you see may not match the watch you get.
Price bands
- Under $120: 316L steel case, mineral glass or thin sapphire, printed dial, 21-jewel Asian movement, folded clasp.
- $150 to $350: 316L or 904L steel, sapphire with anti-reflective coating, applied markers, Miyota 9015 or a 2824 clone, machined clasp.
- Above $400: 904L steel, case geometry closer to the original, decorated movement, matching date font, solid end links.
Price alone does not prove quality. Ask for photos of the unit in stock, not catalog renders.
Checks before payment
- Caseback: reference IW329172 and a serial number, both engraved, not laser-printed.
- Dial print: font weight and spacing match the original. The logo is applied metal, not ink.
- Hand alignment: hour and minute hands line up at 12 and at 6.
- Date window: centered in the aperture, no white gap, font matches the dial print.
- Crystal: sapphire, colorless anti-reflective coating, no blue or purple cast on a black dial.
- End links: no gap to the case, spring bars seated, no rattle.
- Crown: screw-down threads catch on the first turn, no cross-threading.
- Weight and thickness: ask for caliper photos and compare them with the IWC spec sheet.
- Timegrapher: rate within ±15 seconds per day, amplitude 250 to 310 degrees, beat error under 0.5 ms.
- Rotor: one wrist shake, listen for grinding or a loose weight.
Movements
Most replicas in this range use one of three movements.
- Miyota 9015: 24 jewels, 28,800 vph, about 42 hours of reserve, hacking, no phantom date position.
- Seagull ST2130 or Hangzhou 6300: copies of the ETA 2824 layout, 28,800 vph, about 38 hours of reserve.
- Asian 2836: adds a day wheel, sits taller in the case, more parts to fail.
Miyota and 2824 clones both run at 28,800 vph, so the second hand sweep looks the same. Ask which movement is fitted and get a photo of the movement through the caseback.
Water resistance
A printed rating is a claim, not a test result. ISO 22810 sets the rules for water resistance marking, and a maker must test to that standard before printing a depth. Ask for a pressure test result. A screw-down crown and a seated caseback gasket matter more than the number on the dial. Do not swim with an untested replica.
Fit and sizing
Ask for case diameter, lug width, thickness, and bracelet taper in millimeters. Compare them with the IWC spec sheet for the reference. A 1 mm difference in thickness shows on the wrist and on the caseback profile.
Customs and legal risk in the US
Counterfeit watches are illegal to import and to sell in the United States. 15 U.S.C. § 1114 covers trademark infringement, and CBP can seize a shipment. A parcel from an overseas seller can be held at the border. Budget for that risk.
Questions for the seller
- Which movement is fitted?
- Can I see photos of this exact unit with a timestamp?
- What is the measured case diameter, thickness, and lug width?
- Is the crystal sapphire, and does it have coating on one side or two?
- Has the watch been pressure tested, and what was the result?
- What is the return window, and who pays return shipping?
