A replica IWC Portofino copies the outside of the IWC Portofino line. It does not copy the movement, the case finishing, or the warranty. Expect a 40mm steel case, a printed dial, and an Asian automatic movement. Check case size, thickness, movement name, and return terms before you pay.

Genuine Portofino specs to compare

The Portofino line started in 1984. Current models use three case sizes. Use these numbers as a reference point.

  • Portofino Automatic 40mm, ref. IW3565: 40mm case, 9.1mm thick, caliber 35111, 42-hour power reserve, 3 bar water resistance.
  • Portofino Automatic 37mm, ref. IW4581: 37mm case, caliber 35111.
  • Portofino Chronograph 42mm, ref. IW3910: 42mm case, caliber 79320.
  • Portofino Hand-Wound 8 Days, ref. IW5101: 45mm case, caliber 59210, 192-hour power reserve.

Genuine Portofino cases use sapphire crystal and alligator straps. The dial printing is thin and sharp. The date window sits at 3 o'clock on the Automatic 40mm.

Where replica versions differ

Replica Portofino watches differ in four areas.

  1. Case thickness. Replica cases run 1mm to 2mm thicker than the genuine 9.1mm. Measure with calipers.
  2. Movement. Replica sellers list Asian automatic movements such as the 8215 or a clone caliber. Replica versions do not use the 59210 caliber with a 192-hour reserve.
  3. Crystal. Some replicas use mineral glass. Some use sapphire-coated glass. Ask for the material name.
  4. Strap. Replica straps use calf leather with a stamped pattern. Genuine straps use alligator.

Dial details also differ. Check the font weight on "Portofino", the date wheel alignment, and the subdial spacing on chronograph models.

Checks before you buy

  1. Ask for the case diameter and thickness in millimeters.
  2. Ask for the movement name and a photo of the caseback.
  3. Confirm the crystal material.
  4. Ask for a photo of the date window at 3 o'clock.
  5. Confirm the return policy and the delivery time.
  6. Check the price against the genuine retail price. A genuine Portofino Automatic 40mm lists above $5,000. A replica price near that number is a warning sign.

Legal and warranty limits
